‘Heated Rivalry’ Star Robbie GK Feared Fan Backlash Over Surprise Queer Romance Detour

READ TIME: 3 MIN.

Actor Robbie GK has said he was “concerned” about how fans of the breakout LGBTQ+ sports drama Heated Rivalry would react to a major mid‑season storyline shift that put his character’s romance at the center of the show.

Heated Rivalry, adapted from author Rachel Reid’s Game Changers series of queer hockey romance novels, became an online sensation after debuting in late November, driven largely by the intense, years‑long love story between rival players Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander.

While the show’s first season primarily adapts Reid’s novel Heated Rivalry, it also weaves in material from the earlier book Game Changer, using episode three, titled “Hunter, ” to introduce Scott Hunter, another professional hockey player, and Kip Grady, a smoothie bar worker played by Robbie GK.

In a recent interview originally given to Elle India and reported by LGBTQ+ outlet PinkNews, Robbie GK explained that he and co‑star François Arnaud, who plays Scott, were “definitely concerned” before “Hunter” aired because it marked “a full 180” in tone and focus from the steamy main romance between Ilya and Shane.

Robbie described the Scott‑Kip arc as intentionally distinct, leaning into a softer, more classically rom‑com rhythm compared with the more combustible dynamic of the central couple.

He said this tonal change made him wonder how audiences would receive the shift, especially after the online reaction to the first two episodes made clear just how invested viewers were in Ilya and Shane.

According to Robbie, the creative team deliberately held back publicity around Kip in order to preserve the surprise of the episode‑three pivot, meaning he did not do pre‑release press that might have prepared fans for a second major queer romance.

When “Hunter” first aired, some viewers online expressed frustration that the show appeared to step away from its central relationship to focus on a new couple, while others quickly embraced Scott and Kip and praised the episode’s gentler, emotionally open approach to queer romance.

Robbie acknowledged this “mixed reaction, ” but said he hoped that the payoff in episode five—when the Game Changer arc is concluded—would reframe the detour for at least some viewers who were initially skeptical.

Episode three ends on a painful note, with Scott and Kip apart after Scott decides he cannot yet live openly as a gay athlete, a departure from Rachel Reid’s original novel, where Scott’s journey toward public coming out follows a different beat.

In episode five, titled “I’ll Believe Anything, ” the show echoes a pivotal book moment by having Scott kiss Kip on the ice in front of the crowd and cameras after a crucial game, a public act of queer affection that becomes one of the season’s most talked‑about scenes.

Robbie has said that this kiss does not only resolve Scott and Kip’s storyline, but also directly propels Ilya and Shane’s narrative forward, linking the two couples and reinforcing how one public act of courage can ripple through an entire queer community.

In a separate video interview with entertainment journalist Jeff Conway on YouTube, Robbie reflected on the “beautiful” impact that final ice‑rink scene has had for many LGBTQ+ viewers, saying he feels grateful for the opportunity to help depict a moment of joyful, visible queer love in a major series.

He noted that seeing two men share an unambiguous, celebratory kiss in the hyper‑masculine world of professional sport can be especially meaningful for queer and questioning young people who rarely see themselves represented in such spaces.

Robbie has also spoken about the sudden intensity of fan attention around his body and personal life, explaining in an interview with writer Evan Ross Katz that he tries to keep a healthy distance between online discourse about Kip and his own sense of self.

He expressed support for co‑stars and fellow creatives who have called for boundaries around their privacy amid the show’s viral success, emphasizing that performers are entitled to personal lives outside their on‑screen personas.

Beyond the individual storyline, Heated Rivalry’s decision to center multiple queer romances, including a softer, rom‑com‑inflected pairing like Scott and Kip, expands the range of LGBTQ+ experiences visible in mainstream television and challenges lingering stereotypes about queer relationships being solely tragic or hyper‑sexualized.

The series has already been renewed for a second season, with star Hudson Williams teasing that upcoming episodes will continue to build on the romantic and emotional stakes established in season one, giving fans more time with the couples they have come to champion.
