Jon Stewart Mocks GOP's Hypothetical Gay Wedding Answers
EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Are you now or have you ever been invited to a gay wedding?
Ever since Ted Cruz and Rick Santorum said they wouldn't and Marco Rubio said he would, the question on every reporter's lips to potential 2016 GOP presidential hopefuls has been whether or not they would attend a gay wedding of a family member despite their record against gay rights.
It's a query that has elicited some cringe-worthy answers, and no one seems to be enjoying the responses more "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart.
While the opinions of most Americans on the issue of marriage equality has shifted since the Bush years, Republicans fight to keep in step with both their out-of-step party base and national zeitgeist on this hot-button social issue.
"This campaign boils down to, 'Who do you trust to pick up the phone at 3 a.m. and RSVP to a gay wedding?'" Stewart said on Tuesday night's edition of the popular Comedy Central news program.
While Stewart is having fun watching the tightrope act attempted by the GOP on the marriage issue, none has provided the rich comedy fodder offered by failed hard rightwing 2012 candidate Rick Santorum, who said that he wouldn't attend a gay wedding, but still "love and support" the couple nonetheless.
"I know you don't want to redefine the word 'marriage,' but it does appear you want to redefine the words 'love' and 'support,'" Stewart mocked before referencing Dan Savage's now infamous Google bomb of the anti-gay senator's name.
"Santorum doesn't want to attend the wedding, that's fine; he'll be there on the wedding night," Stewart said, adding "Don't Google that."
