A Sneak Peek at Summer in the Berkshires Starts with Sondheim's 'Company' at Barrington Stage in the Berkshires
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
As the Berkshires gear up for summer, cultural organizations are announcing their best concerts, exhibits, and plays to make this one of the best seasons yet. Centrally located in the downtown arts district of Pittsfield, MA the Hotel on North is the ideal hub for exploring it all. The hotel offers a rich blend of local roots and contemporary style and was named by Architectural Digest as one of "Favorite New American Hotels."
Just around the corner, the award-wining Barrington Stage Company will present a new production of Ragtime as well as the celebrated musical "Company." This classic about love, dating and friendship in the city, stars Aaron Tveit of Broadway's "Catch Me If You Can" and "Next to Norma."
At Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the slate includes "The Four Voices" tour with Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and the Indigo Girls; Amy Ray, and Emily Saliers, as well as returning favorites such as Yo Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, and Emanual Ax. Several programs this season feature music director Andris Nelsons conducting, including the festival's first-ever performance of the complete works of Das Rheingold.
Also showing this summer are a season's worth of star-studded performances... At Williamstown Theater Festival (Jane Kaczmarek in "The Roommate"), Berkshire Theatre Group ("Arsenic and Old Lace," "The Music Man," and "Million Dollar Quartet"), Shakespeare & Company (celebrating their 40th season with "A Midsummer Night's Dream" staged outdoors at The Mount) and Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival celebrating its 85th season.
For art lovers, the possibilities are vast. Choose from the MASS MoCA in North Adams (a new gallery space opening this summer nearly doubles their footprint), Chesterwood and the Norman Rockwell Museum (with a special exhibition entitled "Inventing America: Rockwell and Warhol") in Stockbridge. In addition to special exhibitions, such as "Picasso: Encounters" at The Clark, these museums showcase world-renowned permanent collections and special events throughout the summer.
