Omar Apollo Shares his Provocative 'Queer' Moment (with the Help of an Emoji)

READ TIME: 4 MIN.

In Luca Guadagnino's "Queer," Daniel Craig plays William Lee, an American ex-pat living in Mexico City in the 1950s and cruising the streets and bars for some companionship. The film mostly focuses on his obsession with Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a younger American tourist; but early on he has a hot encounter with a young Mexican he picks up in a bar, played by out musician Omar Apollo.

With the film coming out on VOD, Apollo shared two IG posts to promote it. In one, he writes: "go watch Queer, i know u need some gay shit inya life."

In the photo, he is standing in his dressing room that has the sign "YOUNG MEXICAN MAN" written on it. It is the unnamed character he plays in Guadagnino's adaptation of William Burroughs' unfinished novel.

The second post is a still from the scene in which Apollo walks full frontal across a room to stand next to a gobsmacked Craig with a well-placed emoji over his privates.

Amongst the comments were Troye Sivan asking, "What platform?" And actor Hari Nef added, "Finally I can stream in peace."

Apollo also shared that some of his followers were not pleased with his post. "I'm losing followers for posting this," he wrote via his Instagram Story. "Unfollow me if ur a homophobe. You're not my target audience. I will never make myself 'palatable.' This isn't my life, I AM life. Stupid."

The role came to Apollo when someone from Guadagnino's team reached out to Apollo on Instagram. "Next thing I know, the next day, I'm on FaceTime with him," he told Forbes late last year. "I was really excited that I was even considered because on top of that, the cast - Drew [Starkey], who is already a friend, and Daniel Craig, who is a prolific actor - this is my first one and it's wild & crazy."

Asked by The Hollywood Reporter about the reason he took the role, Apollo explained: "See, I'm from Indiana. That's a very conservative state but I hope I open somebody's mind out there," he said. "Especially now, I'm even more proud to be in a film like this. I already was proud but now, I'm like, yeah. I feel like it's punk. This film coming out at this time, specifically, I think it's going to help a lot. There's a story about love and loss that transcends sexuality and people. It's humanity."
