Jonathan Bailey's putting it all on the screen, but he's also got a hidden talent: He performed a clarinet solo on the soundtrack of the newest "Jurassic World" movie – and he says he "erupted like Vesuvius" with joy at the contribution.
"The 37-year-old actor stopped by 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon' on Wednesday, June 25, where he revealed the story behind his clarinet solo on the upcoming movie's score," People Magazine recounted.
Bailey related the anecdote in an interview where he and Fallon discussed the magazines he's currently covering, the success of "Wicked," and the fashion statement Bailey has made with his "slutty little glasses."
Bailey said that he and a friend went to Abbey Road Studios – not far from where Bailey was treading the boards in a production of "Richard II" – to watch a "105-piece world-class orchestra" record the score for the film, which was written by composer Alexandre Desplat. It was a multi-day project.
"As the week progressed, I came back and I was like, 'Can I bring my clarinet?' I played the clarinet in school," the "Fellow Travelers" star said. "And on the Friday, they said, 'Look, you can come.'"
In the film, a team visits an isolated island where an early batch of de-extincted dinosaurs were cooked up by researchers before the scientists abandoned the island and left the creatures on their own. The expedition's objective is to retrieve exotic dino DNA for use in revolutionary pharmaceuticals... only, these particular beasts are "the worst of the worst," even more lethal than the prehistoric species that were eventually engineered for display at Jurassic Park and its successor, Jurassic World.
The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Ed Skrein, and the score incorporates motifs from John William's original compositions for the franchise.
Bailey explained that he would have been happy "to play one – even if it was, like, one slightly sharp note" with the orchestra, and said that "Would've been my dream come true." He got to play quite a few notes when he was allowed to join other musicians in the recording sessions for various music cues, with Desplat complimenting his skills with, "Hey, you can play."
But the composer invited Bailey to do more – a lot more. "And then a clarinet solo came up," Bailey recounted, "and he said, 'Come on, you're gonna play.'"
Bailey shyly passed on the opportunity, intimidated by the prospect of playing a solo with "world class musicians." "I said I couldn't do it, and I said no," Bailey told Fallon. Naturally, as he heard someone else play the solo, he found himself rueing the missed opportunity: "I'm gonna regret that for the rest of my life," he told himself.
Luckily, Bailey got a second chance.
"It's now or never," the "Wicked" star recalled Desplat telling him when the time came to record another passage for solo clarinet. "And I just went, 'Okay, let's do it.'"
Describing the moment of musical ecstasy, Bailey told Fallon, "This really was a highlight of my career. The nerd in me erupted like Vesuvius."
In an amusing twist, Bailey said he "ended up playing the theme of Dr. Henry Loomis, the character I play" in the movie.
In another beat of synchronicity, Bailey detailed how he first began to play the instrument in 1993... the year "Jurassic Park" was released. "I got given a plastic clarinet by my granddad, who I think won it in a pub."
"Jurassic World: Rebirth" is scheduled to open in cinemas on July 2. Watch the trailer below.
