The Democratic Governors Association says it raised $12.5 million in the first three months of this year, roughly half what its Republican counterparts collected.

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin is the chairman of the committee to elect Democratic governors. He said Friday the fundraising tally is up from the $8 million it raised at this point in 2010. That was the last time there were 36 gubernatorial races. Shumlin says the money will help Democrats combat the "radical social agenda of Republican governors."

The committee did not say how much money it had saved.

The Republicans' committee to elect governors said a day earlier that it raised $23.5 million during the first three months of the year. The Republican committee also has almost $60 million in the bank.
