Texas Anti-Gay Marriage Bill in Limbo With Time Running Out

Jason St. Amand READ TIME: 1 MIN.

A Texas bill that would attempt to defy the U.S. Supreme Court if gay marriage is legalized is in limbo with time running out in the Republican-controlled House.

Outnumbered Democrats continued using stall tactics Thursday seeking to run out the clock before a midnight deadline. That would prevent the House from passing a bill that prohibits public employees from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Republicans remain confident there is time.

Dell Inc. this week became the most visible company to oppose the measure. The Texas-based computer maker says it told Republican Gov. Greg Abbott that the company considers diversity a "business imperative."

Texas Republicans see the bill as a way to put the state at the forefront of resistance if the Supreme Court upholds same-sex marriage.
